Are Candles Allowed On Planes? Here's the Truth!

Candles are the most accessible passport to luxury. No matter if I'm flying halfway across the world or staycationing in downtown Chicago, I always pack a Litotes candle. After a long day in customs, or a long week at work, pouring a hot bath and filling my room with a warm, relaxing aroma transports me to a spa-like paradise.

Are you hesitant about traveling with your candle? Perhaps you choose never to check luggage, like me. In that case, you're likely to be especially sensitive to the ever-changing rules imposed by airport security. In that case, there's good news.

According to TSA, solid candles (not gel) can be transported within carry-on and checked bags, and you can bring as many as you'd like. Hooray! However, there's a caveat (of course there is). The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint. Read that part again.

Once in London, I was forced to toss a travel bottle of perfume (less than one ounce) because the TSA agent decided all of my liquids needed to fit inside a Ziploc snack bag. When I explained to him that I'd visited three countries that trip and no one else mentioned this rule, guess what. He didn't care. And I was in no position to argue. A great rule of thumb, don't travel with anything you'd be devastated to lose forever. Don't be like me.

When traveling with candles, I recommend packing our Little Litotes. They're five ounces of soy-based luxury. I make each Little Litotes from the same recipe as our oversized candles, but they're extremely portable. Little Litotes are also a great way to try a fragrance before investing in a larger-sized candle.
